Airborne Affordable Flyers 09.14.23: Van's Parts, MWLSA Expo Report, 10K Young Eagles

Also: Affordable Flying Expo, Aero-Pup Cowling, Young Eagles Air Academy, FAA Admin Nom

Oregon-based Van’s Aircraft is developing a web-portal by which customers in receipt of cracked aircraft parts may report such and arrange to take delivery of replacement components. Customers visiting the portal will be presented lists of the heretofore problematic laser-cut parts from which they may specify the replacements they require. The ANN crew had an immensely successful trip to Mt., Vernon Illinois for the very busy 15th Annual MidWest LSA Expo. Not the biggest show in the world, there was still LOTS of flying, an overtly friendly atmosphere and a volunteer staff that could NOT be beat. Close to 40 vendors filled the easily accesse

Unfortunate Events... Historic Flight Foundation Aircraft to be Sold Off

The Perils of Speculative Investment

In 2022, a jury in Williston, North Dakota determined Historic Flight Foundation founder John Sessions and one of his companies, Eagle Crest Apartments, had fraudulently transferred funds to other businesses owned by Sessions, including the aforementioned Historic Flight Foundation. Eagle Crest had previously defaulted on a construction loan held by Kansas City-based UMB Bank, which was awarded the aforementioned $20.1-million in March 2022. Sessions appealed the verdict to the North Dakota Supreme Court—albeit unsuccessfully. A receiver hired by UMB Bank was subsequently authorized by a King County, Washington judge to take over Sessions’s companies, as named in the lawsuit, and commence selli

Airobotics Nabs Airworthiness Certification for Drone-in-a-Box System

Airobotics Optimus-1EX UAS Granted Type Cert for Emergency, Survey

Airobotics was proud to have what it calls the "first airworthiness certification for a drone-in-a-box" system, or more specifically, a DiB system used for "emergency response and data capturing applications". The niche mission reflects a pretty hearty market for UAS developers, with a variety of first responder agencies, law enforcement groups, and emergency response bodies ready to adopt affordable uncrewed aircraft. Even better for them, the drone-in-a-box concept doubles down on autonomy, allowing the placement of a fully autonomous, low-maintenance system that can be called into action at any time.

NTSB Final Report: Focke-Wulf FWP-149D

The Mechanic Told The Pilot Not To Fly The Airplane Until The Laboratory Results Were Returned

Analysis: The pilot was conducting a cross-country flight when the airplane had a total loss of engine power while it approached the intended destination airport. Based on witness accounts, the pilot was unable to glide the airplane to the intended destination airport and entered an inadvertent aerodynamic stall at a low altitude. One witness reported that the airplane’s wings rolled left-and-right 2 to 3 times before the airplane “stalled” with the left wing down. The airplane impacted the ground in a left-wing down roll attitude and was destroyed during a postimpact fire.
