The ANN crew had an immensely successful trip to Mt., Vernon Illinois for the very busy 15th Annual MidWest LSA Expo. Not the biggest show in the world, there was still LOTS of flying, an overtly friendly atmosphere and a volunteer staff that could NOT be beat. Close to 40 vendors filled the easily accessed airport ramp, and nearly 200 demo flights were safely executed. Overall traffic was estimated to be up some 20% over previous such events. Airbus Helicopters and Petroleum Helicopters International Group (PHI) have signed a framework agreement comprising commitments for twenty super-medium H175 helicopters and eight H160 (formerly X4) medium utility helicopters. The 28 state-of-the-art rotorcraft will better position PHI to respond to the expected near-term growth of the global energy market and the demand for offshore transportation inherent thereto.

Pilot Shortage Narrative Called Into Question

As special interests in Washington, Brussels, and Luxembourg persist in lamenting a global pilot shortage, the Federal Aviation Administration has released verifiable data clearly indicating the United States is producing record numbers of pilots. The last 12-months have seen the FAA certify a total of 10,191 new Airline Transport Pilots (ATP). In August 2023 alone, upwards of 1,200 new ATPs were vetted and written gleaming new tickets—the largest monthly number in history.

Axiom 3 Crew-Members Approved

Cadence of Private Astronaut Missions to ISS Remains Steady

NASA and its international partners have approved the personnel by which Axiom Space’s third private astronaut mission—Axiom Space 3 (Ax-3)—to the International Space Station will be crewed. The mission, which will launch from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center no earlier than January 2024, will be commanded by Axiom Space chief astronaut and former NASA astronaut Micheal López-Alegría and flown by Italian Air Force Colonel and mission pilot Walter Villadei. The four-man crew will be rounded out by mission specialists Alper Gezeravci of Turkey and ESA (European Space Agency) project astronaut Marcus Wandt of Sweden.

FAI Announces CIAM Legends Award for 3x Winners in Modeling

59 Winners to Be Announced Later This Year

The Fédération Aéronautique International has begun awarding a new medal to 3-time world championship winners in aero and spacemodeling - the CIAM Legends medal. The award goes to those individuals who have won the FAI World Championship at least 3 times, without a need for their victories to be consecutive wins. Groups are not eligible for the CIAM Legends Medal, and the wins can be drawn from any class in the ‘aeromodeling’ and ‘spacemodeling’ categories. Owing to its introduction this year, the FIA will be handing out the CIAM Legends medal to 59 winners, with the majority of them being drawn from American pilots.

Pieter Miller has been named the new deputy executive director of the Salina, Kansas Airport Authority. Mr. Miller will work under longtime executive director Tim Rogers. NTSB Releases Preliminary Report on Alaska Airlines Flight 1288 Incident

What’s Broken Leans Left

The NTSB has released its preliminary report on a 20 August 2023 incident in which a Boeing 737-890, registration N516AS, then acting as Alaska Airlines Flight 1288 sustained serious damage when its left main landing-gear collapsed after an otherwise normal landing on Runway 20R at Santa Ana, California’s John Wayne-Orange County Airport (SNA). The 112 passengers and crew aboard the aircraft were evacuated to an SNA taxiway via mobile stairs. No injuries were reported. The incident-flight was operated under Part 121 of the Federal Aviation Regulations as a scheduled domestic passenger flight from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) to SNA.

When cleared to “fly or maintain runway heading,” pilots are expected to fly or maintain the heading that corresponds with the extended centerline of the departure runway.
