At EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2013 ANN CEO and Editor-In-Chief, Jim Campbell caught up with John Pedersen, the Marketing and Communications Lead for Appareo Systems. Jim asked what’s new and different with their second-generation version of the Stratus system that supplies various types of information to an iOS platform tablet.
Stratus is specifically designed to work with the ForeFlight product being run on an Apple iPad. While it started as a device to wirelessly provide ADS-B functions that includes weather displays at no cost, more features have been added. The system now has a built-in AHARS capability that can provide airplane attitude information on the tablet. This feature provides an obvious level of safety and backup capabilities when flying IFR.
This video provides details on the operation of the Stratus and can open your eyes to an opportunity to have glass cockpit features provided on a cost-effective tablet. While the design of the Stratus was aimed at aircraft with older panels and less built-in capability, Pedersen says it has also found wide use in corporate jet aircraft as a backup system. The video includes demonstrations of the system in action.
