Man Arrested For Shining A Laser Into Aircraft Cockpits

Columbus, Ohio Police Helicopter Was Targeted

A man in Columbus, Ohio was arrested Sunday for shining a laser into the cockpits of a medical services helicopter as well as the police helicopter sent to investigate the incident.

The Associated Press reports that 22-year-old Jared Shapiro aimed the laser sight from a high-powered rifle scope at the two aircraft. After the medical helicopter pilot reported a laser being aimed at his aircraft just after liftoff, Shapiro allegedly did the same thing to the police helicopter searching for him. That pilot coordinated with officers on the ground to locate him and place him under arrest.

Shapiro was charged with interfering with the operation of an aircraft with a laser, which is a second-degree felony.
