New Limited Edition Print By Sam Lyons
The newest print by
aviation artist Sam Lyons [one of our favorites--E.I.C.] pays
tribute to Bob Hoover, one of the greatest military and civilian
pilots of all times. In "Hoover's Maneuver" the living legend is
performing a crowd-pleasing routine in his famous Shrike Commander.
He's doing a Cuban-8 with one engine shut down and the prop
feathered. Millions of airshow attendees have held their breath
while watching Hoover take his Shrike through seemingly gravity
defying stunts.
In his typically modest way, Hoover said, "The Cuban-8 is no big
deal; it's easy."
Maybe it's easy if you're Bob Hoover, who performed his first
Cuban-8 at the tender age of 18. He waited until he was a seasoned
20-year-old before shutting off one engine while doing his
routine.
The original painting was commissioned by Buddy Stallings, owner
of Eastern Aviation Fuels (EAF) of New Bern, N.C. This is the fifth
painting Lyons created for EAF, the nationwide distributor for
Shell Aviation. "Hoover's Maneuver" came about because Bob Hoover
is now the spokesperson for EAF. Hoover co-signed the print edition
owned by EAF as well as a special edition of 200 Signed and
Numbered, and 30 Artist Proofs for Lyons Studio.
Lyons said, "The Shrike Commander seemed like the perfect
aircraft to feature since it is so identifiable with Bob
Hoover."
He added, "It's an honor to be linked with Bob this way and have
him co-sign the prints. I have a lot of respect and admiration for
what he's done throughout his aviation career. He's truly
amazing."
Lyons and Hoover will be attending the NBAA convention on
October 12-13 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. People who visit
Shell Aviation Booth #8806 and present their Shell Aviation credit
cards - or fill out an application for one - can obtain a "Hoover's
Maneuver" print signed by both Lyons and Hoover at no charge.
