Korean Jet Team Bows Out Of Chinese Air Show

U.S. Reportedly Said Performance Could Expose Classified Technology

The Korean government has pulled the Black Eagles aerobatic team from the international air show that opens in Zhuhai, China November 11.

The team was to have performed as part of an expanded military exchange, according to a report from the English version of The Chosunilbo newspaper online. The team was to have flown T-50 supersonic trainer jets that were developed by Korea Aerospace Industries with technical assistance from Lockheed Martin. A Korean government source told the paper that the performances were scratched because "the U.S. Arms Export Control Act and International Traffic in Arms Regulations ban the exports of weapons involving U.S. technology and software to, and their demonstration in, an enemy state."

Critics of the cancellation said China is not clearly designated as an "enemy state", and that it was very unlikely that there would be a technology leak at an air show.
