Classic Aero-TV: Aircraft Battery Care and Feeding--Expertise From Concorde

What You Don't Know, CAN Hurt You And Your Aircraft

While at EAA AirVenture 2014, ANN News Editor Tom Patton begin a quest to learn more about the heart and soul of your aircraft battery.

He sat down with Chris Holder of Concorde Batteries to dig into the details. This video is number 2 of 3 videos that Tom put together to share what he found out about this all-important piece of aircraft equipment. In this video we talk about what’s new in the world of Concorde batteries.

Patton opines that batteries have been around for a long time and the basic concept and principles haven’t changed that much. So, he asks; what is new? It’s obvious that Holder has lots of new things to talk about and the first one he brings up is keeping the battery warm in cold weather and Concorde’s system for doing that. Concorde’s new heating control unit takes care of this problem automatically and Holder explains how it works.

Holder also talks about keeping the battery charged and in good shape when the aircraft is not in use. Concorde recommends an aviation battery minder and brings up the fact that sometimes it’s hard to hook up because of the location of the battery. Now, he says, simple airplane interface kits are available to relieve that problem without making a major modification to the aircraft.

The video goes on to discuss battery capacitance testing and new information recently published by Concorde. Battery technology may have been around for a long time but we learn in this video that modern Concorde batteries are not the same as what grandpa used.
