Man Arrested After Trying To Set Plane On Fire

Crew Declares Emergency, Lands In Edinburgh

A 47-year old man was arrested Wednesday at the airport in Edinburgh, Scotland, accused of trying to set the plane on fire -- with a water bottle.

The suspect, whose identity wasn't made available by law enforcement officers, apparently filled a water bottle with paper and then tried to light it on fire. As other passengers subdued the man, the captain of the easyJet Boeing 737 declared an emergency. Firefighters and police were dispatched to the runway, where they met the aircraft and arrested the suspect.

"The police questioned passengers and our crew, and people were let off the plane one-by-one," an easyJet spokeswoman told the Scotsman newspaper. "The aircraft was kept on the ground and the decision on when to allow it to fly again was taken by Lothian and Borders Police."

Five crewmembers and a number of passengers were questioned as they were escorted from the aircraft.

Flight EZY 235 from London's Stansted Airport to Edinburgh remained at a remote location on the airport for four hours.

The suspect was reportedly "apologetic" after being subdued and did not struggle. There's no word yet on what charges, if any, will be filed.
