FAA Reopens Comment Period On New Propeller Standards

Manufacturers, GAMA Granted 45-Day Extension

The Federal Aviation Administration announced Monday it will reopen the comment period on a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) affecting revised certification standards for aircraft propellers.

The FAA issued its original NPRM on April 11, 2007 regarding the revision of airworthiness standards for the issuance of original and amended type certificates for aircraft props. The original 45-day comment period lapsed June 11... but the FAA says more time is needed to hear from affected parties, including propeller manufacturers McCauley and Hartzell.

The General Aviation Manufacturers Association has also asked for more time to weigh in on the revised standards, according to the FAA. The affected parties had asked for a 60-day extension, but the FAA determined 45 days would allow ample time for additional comments.

The revised NPRM is slated to be published June 20, which would set the expiration date for the reopened comment period as August 1.
