Southwest Pilot Taken Off Flight Deck For Suspected Intoxication

TSA Screener Smelled Alcohol

The copilot of a Southwest Airlines flight was arrested just before pulling back from the gate at Salt Lake City Sunday, on reports a security screener had smelled alcohol on the pilot's breath.

Carl Fulton was booked on suspicion of operating an airliner while under the influence of alcohol following a breath test, said FBI spokesman Patrick Kiernan. The results of the test were not released.

Southwest brought in another copilot for the flight. The plane, bound for Phoenix, AZ and then Albuquerque, NM left SLC about 15 minutes late.

The US Attorney's office was expected to file charges Monday. If found guilty, Fulton faces a penalty of up to 15 years in a federal prison.
