Plans To Move Indiana Airport On Hold

Down Economy Has Reduced Traffic, Grant Not Available

Airport officials in Greenwood, IN, have shelved plans to move Greenwood Municipal Airport (KHFY) due to a downturn in business travel.

Greenwood, IN Sectional

Greenwood Board of Aviation President Jeff Colvin says the airport has been unable to draw the amount of jet traffic it needs to qualify for FAA AIP grants needed for the move. Currently, KHFY logs about 89 aircraft operations per day, according to Air Nav, but Colvin told the Daily Journal that only about 400 of those per year are jet operations.

The uncontrolled airport is south of Indianapolis in a suburban area. It has a single 4,900 foot runway which Colvin says needs to be extended, but that is not feasible in its current location. There are numerous homes and businesses near the airport.

Greenwood Mayor Charles Henderson told the paper he hopes that the airport can eventually be moved to a more rural area west of I-65.
