Hawaii Mourns Loss Of Marines

27 Honored As Base Opens Gates For Grieving Families, Friends

"I just want to tell the families I love these guys. They're a part of me."

That's how USMC Lance Corporal Buck Gates described his effort to memorialize the men killed aboard at USMC CH-53 that went down in Iraq over the weekend. In all, 27 of the 28 people aboard the Sea Stallion were from his base in Hawaii. Forty-four years after the island state itself was struck by a Japanese sneak attack, families and friends of those who died aboard the Sea Stallion paid their respects to those killed in the weekend downing of the Marine helicopter.

They are devastated," said Sharon Kostic, whose husband was on board the aircraft when it crashed in western Iraq. "They are having to make decisions they never thought they would have to make."
