Drone Operator Classes Being Offered At St. Petersburg, FL College

Two Scheduled In The Next Two Weeks

St. Petersburg College in Florida is offering two classes to prepare potential drone operators for careers in the burgeoning industry.

On April 29, the college is offering a one-day class titled "Drones/Unmanned Systems Overview". The class will be held from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the college. The class will present an overview of the emerging uses of UAS, the need for safety and awareness of FAA regulations in regards to use of UAS commercially.  This daylong course will include: Hands-on flight lessons for students, flight demonstrations and drone displays, appropriate use, weather topics, and resources for drone operators, according to the college's website.

The second class, which begins on May 3, is a four-session course over four weeks that builds on the basics presented in the UAS Overview course. It is designed to prepare students for the FAA Remote Pilot Certificate exam (offered at National Aviation Academy and other Clearwater locations - cost for the exam is $150).

Knowledge areas will include: UAS regulations, flight operations, restrictions, loading and performance, emergency procedures, crew resource management, radio communication procedures, determining UAS performance, psychological effects of drugs and alcohol, aeronautical decision-making and judgment, airport operations, maintenance and preflight inspection procedures.

The basic class costs $79, while the longer class will set you back $340.

Television station WFTS reports that the college also plans summer courses for high school students in Pinellas County, as well as a course in drone entrepreneurship.
