NE Florida's Cecil Airport Receives Safety Award

FAA Recongnizes Efforts To Improve Safety

Jacksonville Aviation Authority's Cecil Airport has been awarded the FAA Southern Region's 2011 General Aviation Airport Safety Award for its efforts in safety. This award was  based on the development and implementation of specific airport safety programs, and other accomplishments, that resulted in improved safety.

Cecil Airport put into practice several programs that improved the safety of the airport including the design and execution of a Safety Management System (SMS) program, airport tenant safety awareness, an Annual Safety Fair, a Wildlife Hazard Assessment, and an overview of the airport's safety initiatives and accomplishments.

Cecil Airport is the first general aviation airport to design and execute a Safety Management System (SMS) program, which undoubtedly helped to secure the FAA's award as the general aviation airport with the best ongoing safety program in the Southeast United States. "The Cecil Airport team is outstanding, and richly deserves this award," said Winsome A. Lenfert, Airports Division Manager, FAA Southern Region. "Under Rusty Chandler's leadership, they maintain a strong forward-looking focus on safety in all aspects of airport operations."

"We are thrilled to receive this prestigious award," said Rusty Chandler, Cecil Airport Manager. "With management's vision, employee knowledge and training, tenant participation and community involvement, Cecil Airport effectively enhanced its safety culture via implementation of various airport programs, improvements and initiatives."

The Southern Region is comprised of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. According to the 2011-2015 National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems Report, this region is home to approximately 428 general aviation and 55 reliever airports.
