Van,s RV-7 Involved In In-Flight Breakup

Two On Board Fatally Injured In New Zealand Accident On New Year's Day

A Van's RV-7 reportedly broke up in flight and went down in a paddock in a rural area of New Zealand New Year's Day. The two people on board were fatally injured in the accident.

The New Zealand Herald reports that witnesses said they saw parts separating from the airplane as it flew on a northerly course less than a mile before it went down in a paddock near the Northern Wairoa River.

Newshum.co.nz reports that the pilot of the plane was Dean Voelkerling, an experienced helicopter rescue pilot, who had been a member of the Whangarei Flying Club for three years. The name of his passenger has not been released.

Voelkerling and his wife had built the RV-7, according to the report. The accident is still under investigation, and no further details are available at this time.
