Airborne-Flight Training 03.18.21: XPW USAF Training, Italian Navy, CAP Scholarships

Seven Airmen made history as the first “Accelerated Path to Wings” program  to graduate and they transitioned from students to Air Force pilots during a ceremony on March 12. Nicknamed the “XPW” program, the course is part of Air Education and Training Command's current pilot training transformation efforts and consists of students completing an undergraduate pilot training curriculum that only utilizes one airframe, the T-1 Jayhawk. The 2-inch, solid-state instrument displays attitude, altitude, airspeed, slip, vertical trend and heading information to the pilot during normal or standby operation in the event of primary instrument failure. MGen Des Barker Killed In Accident

Well-Known Test Pilot and Airshow Pilot Lost

The International Council of AirShows reports that Major General Des Barker (South African Air Force, retired) died Wednesday afternoon in an aircraft accident near the city of Gqeberha, about 450 miles due east of Cape Town on South Africa's southern coast. Barker's wife reported to ICAS that Des was conducting a check-ride in a museum's Patchen Explorer when it experienced a likely engine failure and crashed short of the runway at Swartkop Air Force Base. Both Des and another retired air force officer were killed in the accident.

93 CAP Cadet Scholarships Worth $155,500 Awarded

Twenty More Cadets Were Recommended For Acceptance To The USAF Prep School

Nearly 100 Civil Air Patrol cadets from 35 wings are receiving academic and flight scholarships worth a combined total of $155,500 in 2021. Twenty more cadets were recommended for acceptance to the U.S. Air Force Preparatory School in Colorado Springs. In all, 61 academic scholarships account for $120,500 of the total amount, with 32 flight scholarships totaling the remaining $35,000. “You had tough competition, and you should be proud of your selection,” Maj. Gen. Mark Smith, CAP’s national commander and CEO, said in a congratulatory message prepared for the scholarship recipients.

ALPA Applauds DOT Action on Hong Kong Flights

Aircraft manufacturers have been using the same aircraft design for the past 60 years, with few exceptions.

The FAA has proposed civil penalties of $20,000 and $12,250 against two passengers for allegedly interfering with, and in one case assaulting, flight attendants who instructed them to wear facemasks and obey various federal regulations.

The Commemorative Air Force has announced a generous $500,000 matching grant from the Ray Foundation to aid in funding the Henry B. Tippie National Aviation Education Center at the CAF’s headquarters in Dallas. The Ray Foundation will match all funds raised dollar-for-dollar, up to $500,000, received through December 31, 2021. Experienced A Failure Of The Right Engine, A Pratt & Whitney PW4077

On February 20, 2021, about 1309 mountain standard time (MST), United Airlines flight 328, a Boeing 777-222, N772UA, experienced a failure of the right engine, a Pratt & Whitney PW4077, while climbing through an altitude of about 12,500 feet mean sea level (msl) shortly after takeoff from Denver International Airport (DEN), Denver, Colorado. There were no injuries to the 239 passengers and crew onboard, and the airplane sustained minor damage.
