Tests Will Qualify The eFlyer 2 Parachute System To ASTM Standards

Aviation Safety Resources, Inc. (ASR), has successfully completed the first developmental test of its whole-aircraft parachute recovery system for upcoming eFlyer 2. Larry Williams, ASR President and CEO, said initial testing was completed at a drop range test facility outside Henderson, Nev., in late February 2021. “This test was the first in a series of tests to qualify the eFlyer 2 parachute system to ASTM standards and make sure the canopy will withstand the load put on it,” he said.

Will Study How UAS Can Best Transport Cargo, Including Parcels, At Lower Altitudes

The FAA is partnering with the Choctaw Nation to study how UAS can best transport cargo, including parcels, at lower altitudes. The FAA’s Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center (MMAC), signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. The agreement will enable the MMAC to work with the Choctaw Nation to study human factors, supply chain management and air traffic control. The parties will use virtual simulated urban environments for their research.

Another Legacy Blue Angel Hornet Prepped For Outside Display

Will Serve As A Pedestaled Display In The Courtyard Of Commander, Naval Air Forces

An F/A-18 Hornet fighter once part of the Navy’s Blue Angels demonstration flight squadron is heading to a new permanent home by early April. The legacy “C” model Hornet will serve as a pedestaled display in the courtyard of Commander, Naval Air Forces (CNAF) on Naval Air Station North Island. "CNAF requested a Blue Angel and with the legacy Blue Angel platform no longer being required, they were able to secure this aircraft for their request,” said Ehren Terbeek, Fleet Readiness Center Southwest (FRCSW) F/A-18 Legacy & E/F Program Manager.

FAA: Laser Strikes Increase Even with Fewer Planes Flying

FAA Has Imposed Civil Penalties Up To $30,800

Laser strikes against pilots increased in 2020 even with the overall decrease in air traffic operations. In 2020, pilots reported 6,852 laser strikes to the FAA. This is an increase from 6,136 laser strikes reported in 2019 and is the highest number reported to the agency since 2016. The FAA remains vigilant in raising awareness about misuse of lasers when they are pointed towards aircraft. Intentionally aiming lasers at an aircraft poses a safety threat to pilots and violates federal law. Many high-powered lasers can incapacitate pilots flying aircraft that may be carrying hundreds of passengers.

On Wednesday, March 3, Starship serial number (SN10) successfully completed SpaceX’s third high-altitude flight test of a Starship prototype from a SpaceX test site in Cameron County, Texas. NTSB Prelim: Mooney M20E

Pilot Attempted To Make An Off Airport Landing About 1 Mile Northeast Of The Airport

On February 23, 2021 at 1700 Pacific standard time, a Mooney M20E, N3254F, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Livermore Municipal Airport (LVK), Livermore, California. The pilot and one passenger were not injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. According to the pilot, the takeoff from runway 7 was normal; about 200 ft above ground level (agl), the engine lost total power.

AD: Robinson Helicopter Company Helicopters

AD 2021-04-12 Was Prompted By Reports Of Tail Rotor (T/R) Drive Shaft Forward Hanger Bearing Failures

The FAA is adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for Robinson Helicopter Company (Robinson) Model R66 helicopters. This AD was prompted by reports of tail rotor (T/R) drive shaft forward hanger bearing failures. This AD requires installing a certain part numbered kit and removing parts from service or replacing a certain part-numbered T/R drive shaft assembly. This AD also prohibits the installation of certain parts. The FAA is issuing this AD to address the unsafe condition on these products. This AD is effective April 12, 2021.

AD: Textron Aviation, Inc. Airplanes

AD 2021-04-10 Requires Repetitively Inspecting The Inboard And Outboard Elevator Torque Tube Attachments

The FAA is adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for certain Textron Aviation Inc. (Textron) (type certificate previously held by Cessna Aircraft Company) Models 208 and 208B airplanes. This AD was prompted by reports of loose elevator torque tube attach fasteners. This AD requires repetitively inspecting the inboard and outboard elevator torque tube attachments for loose or incorrectly installed fasteners, replacing all fasteners if loose or incorrectly installed fasteners are found, and reporting the inspection results to the FAA. This AD also includes optional actions to terminate the repetitive inspections. The FAA is issuing this AD
