Becker Avionics, Avidyne Corporation, and Force Aviation are working with the CAF to upgrade the cockpit of an iconic B-17 Flying Fortress, named Texas Raiders, which resides at Conroe-North Houston Regional Airport. The aircraft, which began life outfitted with vacuum-tube radios that filled a forty square foot compartment, now navigates and communicates via three solid-state boxes that measure only inches on each side.

LiquidPiston has disclosed the adaptation of its X-Engine technology for the United States Air Force to use in unmanned aerial systems (UAS) as well as “orbs” - urban air mobility (UAM) vehicles designed to carry people and cargo around. The X-Engine, a next-generation rotary diesel engine, is being evaluated as an enabling technology to power the UAS or orb through a hybrid-electric propulsion system. NASA is targeting a two-hour test window that opens at 3 p.m. EDT Thursday, March 18, for the second hot fire test of the core stage for the agency’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket at NASA’s Stennis Space Center near Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. On test day, engineers will power up all the core stage systems, load more than 700,000 gallons of cryogenic, or supercold, propellant into the tanks, and fire the rocket’s four RS-25 engines at the same time to simulate the stage’s operation during launch, generating 1.6 million pounds of thrust.

GAMA has added three board members to serve on its Executive Committee leadership team. The Executive Committee is comprised of members of GAMA’s Board of Directors, who provide strategic leadership for the association and lead its policy committees. David Coleal, CEO of Incora, will serve as chair of the Airworthiness and Maintenance Policy Committee. The committee works with authorities to promote appropriate regulations and policies for maintenance and repair stations. Coleal has previously served on the Executive Committee and chaired the Environment Committee. Coleal has been a member of the GAMA Board of Directors since 2015.

Sagetech Avionics and American Aerospace ISR (AA ISR) have signed an MOU to integrate Sagetech’s Detect and Avoid (DAA) system into the AA ISR AiRanger unmanned aircraft. The companies expect to have a certifiable prototype of the system ready for flight testing by the end of the year. “Detect and Avoid systems are critical for beyond visual line-of-sight (BVLOS) flight and critical to the mission of the long endurance AiRanger aircraft,” said Tom Furey, CEO of Sagetech Avionics. “We are pleased to partner with the innovative AA ISR group to bring the world’s first certifiable low-SWaP DAA solution to test flights.”
