Smoke Prompts Evacuation Of RDU Tower

Fire Alarm Sends Everybody Into Parking Lot

The tower at Raleigh-Durham International was evacuated for a short time Friday night after it filled with smoke.

Nobody was hurt, but normally unflappable controllers were sent scurrying into the cool night air nonetheless.

The FAA says the smoke apparently came from an overheated exhaust fan.

There weren't any flight delays. ATC personnel were sent to an auxiliary facility in the airport's Terminal A.

"It was very orderly," said Kathleen Bergen, an FAA spokeswoman in Atlanta.

She said the auxiliary facility was up and running within five minutes of the tower evacuation.

The main tower was declared safe and controllers went back to work there about a half hour after the 10:30 p.m. EDT alarm.
