Ampaire Announces RED Aircraft as ICE Supplier for Eco-Caravan

Engine Company Begins Joint Effort on Hybrid JetA/Electric Powertrain

Ampaire has announced a key collaborator on their Cessna Grand Caravan conversion project in RED Aircraft, who will soon offer their AO3 series engine to complete the Eco Caravan.

Under their new memorandum of understanding, the companies will work together to develop a hybrid system using the compression ignition engine in a parallel configuration. The 550 hp engine will provide base power while the Ampaire electrical system provides peak output, allowing substantial improvements in economy and performance. Ampaire estimates a reduction in fuel consumption by 70% when used on shorter trips, with more minor gains on longer journeys as the system is forced to rely on traditional ICE combustion. On longer trips, efficiency gains are a slightly more modest 50% reduction in fuel burn, with corresponding reductions in CO2 emissions.

Ampaire selected the RED engine for a few unique characteristics, selecting them from amid a field of competirors for their fit with the hybrid aircraft program. The AO3 series boasts increased thermodynamic efficiency over a turboprop engine, as well as its high tolerance for a range of sustainable aviation fuels.

Even better for the prototype Ampair system, the RED engine has proven to be a robust, reliable mill in its use with the Air Tractor AT 301 and YAK-52 aerobatic trainer aircraft. Ampaire successfully conducted the first ground tests of the combined RED hybrid unit last April, and are aiming for flight testing to be completed prior to year’s end. In addition to their flight test program, Ampaire looks to obtain their supplemental type certificate approval by 2024.

“The modern, powerful and ultra-fuel-efficient RED engines have exactly the right characteristics for the Eco Caravan’s hybrid-electric propulsion system and for many other upgrades or all-new designs we may pursue,” said Ampaire CEO Kevin Noertker. “We are very pleased to take this first step in collaboration with a company that shares our goal to decarbonize aviation while reducing costs for aircraft operators and their passengers.”
