Model Airplane Loss Draws Federal Attention

Accident Near A Bridgeport, CT, Power Plant Raises FBI Eyebrows

An RC airplane that crashed near a power plant in Bridgeport, CT, got the attention of both local and federal officials, but ended with the pilot only getting a warning from police.

The pilot had been flying the camera-equipped aircraft over Seaside Park when he lost control near the plant and it went down, according to a report from television station WTNH. He went to the security gate and said he thought his RC airplane might have gone down on the utility company's property, adding that he might have gotten some footage of the power plant with the camera on board,

That might have been a bad idea. The security guards called police with security concerns about the potential of aerial video of the power plant. The local police got the FBI involved, who interviewed the model airplane's pilot.

The pilot gave consent for a review of the footage from the airplane, which included about 10 minutes of video of the park and two minutes of the power plant. He was not detained further, but was given a "stern warning" not to fly his model aircraft near a power plant in the future.

That may not be a problem. While he did have the video, which had been transmitted to a recording device on the ground, the airplane is still missing.
