The annual pilgrimage to Reno by dozens of heavily modified racing aircraft is not without its hazards.
Unlimited racing lost a major player this week as 'Precious Metal' -- a highly-modified P-51 Mustang, was lost in a fire shortly after refueling on the way to Reno. It’s reported that after being fueled and starting to taxi away from the fuel pumps, the fire erupted. By the time the aircraft was stopped, the fire had reached the cockpit and there was no choice but to abandon the aircraft. Fortunately, the pilot, Thom Richard was not injured. A fly-by of a group of 20 Spitfire by owners who had hoped to make a commemorative appearance on September 20 in commemoration of the Battle of Britain were stopped in their tracks by astronomical insurance rates. According to a report, the Spitfire owners would have had to come up with the equivalent of about $77 thousand for insurance before they would be allowed to fly their airplanes over the city. The first production Arrius 2R engine has been delivered to Bell Helicopter on schedule last month. Selected to power the Bell 505 Jet Ranger X, the Arrius 2R
is the only turbine in the 500 shaft horsepower range to feature a dual-channel FADEC. The handover to Bell Helicopter happened at the new Bell 505 assembly center in Lafayette, Louisiana and marks a major step in the Arrius 2R program. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
