Two Aircraft Collide On Diamond Point, WA Runway

Arriving Airplane Landed Short, Hit Aircraft In Run-Up Area

There were no serious injuries when two aircraft collided on the runway at Diamond Point Airport (2WA1) in Sequim, WA Tuesday, but both airplanes sustained substantial damage.

Theodore Calderone was in the run-up area at the departure end of runway 29 in a Cessna 150 with a passenger, identified as Ernie Hanson, on board. Witnesses say, and the FAA confirms, that a Piper PA-28-180 (N5101L) flown by Dennis Rech was too low on approach, and his landing gear struck a berm between the runway and Diamond Point Road.

The PA-28 "essentially came in on top of them," hitting the right wing of the 150, volunteer firefighter Mary Dee Countryman told the Peninsula Daily News. The landing gear on the Cherokee collapsed and a fuel tank was ruptured, spilling about 30 gallons of fuel onto the runway.

The volunteer fire department sprayed down the fuel spill with fire retardant foam. All three people involved in the accident were reportedly uninjured.
