Source: How representatives with Columbia Aircraft describe the issues leading to its announcement Thursday that, despite strong interest and healthy sales, the Bend, OR-planemaker was forced to lay off 59 workers from its staff of just over 600. Columbia was socked by a freak hailstorm last June, leading the company to refinish some 60 planes; delays in getting FAA approval for the popular Garmin G1000 cockpit avionics suite also kept planes from being delivered.
