Eight Newark TSA Screeners Suspended

Transgressions Range From Sleeping On The Job To Improper Screening For Explosives

Eight TSA workers have been suspended from duty at Newark Airport for a range of security lapses ranging from sleeping on the job to failing to screen some bags for explosives.

The New York Post reports that the TSA screeners were observed by surveillance cameras and other methods sleeping on duty. Some have been accused of stealing from passengers luggage, and failing to properly screen for explosives in checked luggage. One supervisor has been suspended for failing to monitor her employees.

A law-enforcement official told the paper that after a 0200 flight departs Terminal B, which handles many Delta and international flights, that there is "no activity for a while, so they'll sit down and go to sleep."

The investigation is part of a larger probe being conducted by the Department of Homeland Security. TSA would only say in a statement that it "takes immediate action when our standards aren't met."
