Sebring Organizers Seek FAA Assistance With Air Traffic Control

Central Florida Event Draws Thousands Of Pilots, Tourists, Exhibitors

The Executive Director of Sebring Regional Airport (KSEF) has asked the Highlands County, FL Tourist Development Council for a grant to bring FAA controllers to the airport for 2011 U.S. Sport Aviation Expo in January.

Mike Willingham made the appeal at a meeting last week. The airport normally is uncontrolled, but the Executive Director says that the event draws so much air traffic that FAA participation has become "critical".

The Tampa Tribune reports that Expo Chairman Bob Wood joined Willingham at the meeting to request $6,295 to staff the airport with FAA controllers during the show. He said the event has grown rapidly in its first six years, with about 11,000 attendees from 38 states and seven foreign countries at last year's event, along with 157 exhibitors.

The Tourist Development Council approved the request, but it must also be approved by the Highlands County Commission. The 7th U.S. Sport Aviation Expo is set for January 20-23 in Sebring, FL.
