USMC Buys UK Harriers To Harvest Spare Parts

As Many As 40 Of The VTOL Aircraft To Be Purchased, Cannibalized

The U.S. Marine Corps plans to buy as many as 40 Harrier GR7s and GR9s in order to harvest them for parts for their fleet of AV-8Bs, and some in the U.K. are reportedly not happy at the purchase price.

DoD will reportedly spend about $55 million to acquire the aircraft, which according the the Telegraph newspaper and relayed by the oniline news site DoD Buzz the U.K. recently spent some $1.6 billion to upgrade and maintain before decommissioning the fleet.

While some defense experts and government watchers are bemoaning the fire-sale price the Marines seem to have gotten on the jump jets, analysts say the underlying reason the Corps will need them is delays in the F-35 program. The AV-8Bs will reportedly need to be kept in the air several years longer than originally planned while flight testing continues on the Joint Strike Fighter.
