Florida National Guard Troops Could Soon Be Back At The Airport

And They Won't Be Passengers

You might remember them from the dark days just after the 9/11 attacks three years ago -- dour-looking soldiers in camouflage fatigues, with M-16 rifles slung over their shoulders, patrolling the nation's sky terminals.

They could soon be back -- at least in Florida -- after state officials got a "warning order" from US Northern Command.

The Florida National Guard is now drawing up plans to send "at least a couple of hundred" troops to airports across the state, according to spokesman Lt. Col. Ron Tittle.

Although no one is being specific about the potential threat, Homeland Security officials nationwide are increasing vigilance nationwide in advance of the November 2nd elections.

At least one Senator, Mark Dayton (D-MN), has closed his offices on Capitol Hill and sent staffers home, citing similar concerns raised during an unspecified security briefing.

"Obviously, this is a very critical time for our nation, and we are working with the (Florida) National Guard to determine how they can help elevate security during this crucial time," said TSA spokeswoman Lauren Stover, quoted by the Daytona Beach News-Journal.
