Urgent CAA AD: DCA/Brantly

Applicability: Model B-2, B-2A and B-2B aircraft, S/Ns 2001 onward, fitted with a vertical shaft P/N 249-10, and Model B-2, B-2A, and B-2B aircraft, all S/Ns, fitted with a vertical shaft P/N 249-10 purchased after 1994.

This AD is prompted by an accident and an incident report of fatigue cracking of an upper tail rotor gearbox vertical shaft. The fatigue cracking may have been caused by higher than expected loads, most likely due to misalignment. Fatigue cracking of the shaft, if not detected, could result in failure of the shaft and subsequent loss of control of the helicopter.

Requirement: To prevent fatigue cracking and failure of the upper tail rotor gearbox vertical shaft, which may result in the loss of control of the aircraft, accomplish FAA AD 2006-08-07.

(FAA AD 2006-08-07 refers)

Compliance: Within the next 10 hours TIS, and before further flight after any hard landing or any main or tail rotor sudden stoppage.

Effective Date: 4 May 2006
