First Flight: Nanjing Light Aircraft AC500

What is reported to be the first flight of China's "AC500 Air Sedan" was conducted Tuesday. The five seat fixed wing, trike geared aircraft is expected to have a 620 mile range, a 180 mph cruise and cost a little over $430K.

The AC500 project is the result of a collaboration between Nanjing Aeronautics and Astronautics University and the Nanjing Light Aircraft Co Ltd. Designed for business, sightseeing and prospecting; the aircraft is being promoted with "advanced avionics suite" and will be available in both a trainer version (with dual controls) as well as a "business model."

The AC 500 has a 33.5 foot wingspan, measures 24.5 feet long and stands 17 feet high. The service ceiling is 18,000 feet.

The general designer of the AC500 project, Pan Jiazheng, expects the planes to have "a large potential market in China."
