F-16 Down: South Carolina

Pilots Ejected Safely

An F-16 from Shaw AFB in Sumter, SC, went down Monday evening in the Ashley River. The two crewmembers on board the fighter were rescued in a marsh just before 1700 local.

Maj. Steve Granger and Lt. Col. Maurice Salcedo, both of the Ninth Air Force, were taken to a local hospital where they were examined for injuries.

The aircraft, assigned to the 20th Fighter Wing, 77th Fighter Squadron, went down near the Ashley River Memorial Bridge on US 17. The river itself was cordoned off by the US Coast Guard as search crews pored over the wreckage.

Shaw is home to approximately 80 F-16s -- 20 of them configured as two-place training aircraft. Monday's mishap was the first for aircraft assigned to Shaw since a mid-air collision March 9th, 2004. In that instance, both aircraft were able to return safely to Shaw and no one was hurt.
