Airborne 04.06.20: First FlightDesign F2, Stratolaunch Tests, Pipistrel

Also: ERAU Free Online Courses, Orion Passes Tests, Boeing Shuts Philly, A320 Production

After rerouting from the cancelled Sun N’ Fun airshow, the very first F2-LSA has arrived at Flight Design USA headquarters in Connecticut.

The F2 has completed ASTM and US LSA compliance testing, and serial production has started. The next F2’s are expected to arrive in the US by June 2020. F2 CS-23 and the F2 UL for Europe are expected to be certified by October 2020. The F2 series represents a next-generation effort for Flight Design as it expands its light aircraft offerings. F2 is an EASA CS-23 certified aircraft with an MTOW of 650 kg, or if flown as an SLSA or Ultralight -- 600 kg MTOW. Stratolaunch, a company that was founded by the late Paul Allen, is shifting its focus to hypersonic test beds carried aloft by its purpose-built aircraft. The Stratolaunch aircraft had originally been built for horizontal-launch satellite missions, carrying a rocket to altitude which would then boost its payload into orbit. But the company was sold last year after Allen's death in 2018, and it has now relaunched with an updated website explaining its new mission. Pipistrel is a project partner in the ARTEM project (Aircraft noise Reduction Technologies and related Environmental iMpact) that aims at the maturing of promising novel concepts and methods which are directly coupled to new low noise and disruptive 2035 and 2050 aircraft configurations. Last week, members of Pipistrel Vertical Solutions (PVS) research have just returned from a week long wind tunnel testing in INCAS, Bucharest. The team was performing tests on a composite design model wing with modular attachment points for different Distributed Electrical Propulsion (DEP) configurations, designed and built by PVS within the ARTEM European project. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
