South Korean Airliner Skids Off Runway

Wind, Landing Gear, Or Both?

A South Korean ATR-72-200 skidded off the runway while landing at the southern resort island of Jeju Tuesday.

Officials gave conflicting reports on why the 66-seat Hansung Airlines plane (file photo of type, above) departed the runway. One said a sudden wind gust blew the plane off the runway... while others say the incident was caused by a broken main landing gear wheel. T

The airline told the Associated Press none of the passengers onboard the plane were injured... but airport officials say six passengers were taken to area hospitals.

The incident closed the runway at Jeju International for several hours.

This is the first incident for the South Korean low-cost carrier, which began operations in August 2005 with two ATRs.
