FAA Shuts Down Meigs Field Control Tower

FAA: Without A Runway, Who Needs A Tower?

First it lost its runway. Now it has no one in the control tower. The demise of Chicago's Meigs Field continues, in spite of aviation group efforts to halt it.

The Federal Aviation Administration shut down the control tower at Meigs Field, Chicago's lakefront general aviation airport. Aircraft traffic near Chicago's lakefront will be controlled by the air control center in Elgin.

The FAA says a torn-up and abandoned airport does not need its own traffic controllers. The city of Chicago closed the airport last Sunday night and tore up parts of the runway to make it unusable. A Cook County judge ordered a halt to future demolition Friday, but the city insists it was within its legal rights to close Meigs.

The FAA closed the tower Friday afternoon.
