Family Sues American Airlines Over Refusal To Divert Flight

A 25-Year-Old Passenger Suffered A Medical Emergency On Board, And Died

The family of a passenger who suffered an embolism while flying aboard an American Airlines airliner two years ago is suing the carrier because the crew did not divert the flight and make an emergency landing.

MSN reports that a doctor informed the crew that Brittany Oswell needed immediate medical attention for her condition, and told the crew to divert immediately. The pilots did not divert the flight, and continued on to its original destination, about 90 minutes away.

Oswell reportedly survived long enough to be taken to a hospital when the airplane landed, but she never regained consciousness and was taken off life support three days after being hospitalized.

According to ABC News, Oswell's mother said that the medical emergency "was not taken very seriously" by the crew, and her daughter died because "someone made a business decision to keep flying a plane when she needed emergency medical help.”

American said in a statement to ABC news that it takes passenger safety "very seriously" and it is "looking into the details of the complaint."
