Aero-TV: 'I Feel I Can Fly' - PLW Modelworks's Birdly IITSEC 2016 FlightSim Demo

A Truly Unique Flying Experience…

Most of us have dreamed of being able to fly like a bird. And while that’s not an option for most of us, unless you’re interested in a wingsuit, one company has devised a way to at least get close.

At I/ITSEC 2016 in Orlando, Florida, Tony Isaacs, VP of Development for PLW Model Works, told ANN CEO and Editor in Chief Jim Campbell that they have married high-resolution virtual reality with a fully-immersive simulation to allow you to “fly” over cities, like New York City, for a bird’s-eye view.

“It’s very up close and personal,” Isaacs said. “In fact, if you’re not careful, you’ll run into one of those buildings and go ‘splat’.”

PLW Modelworks collects aerial imagery from around the world, “We have proprietary software in-house that we use to build the models,” says Isaacs.

To fly over a city, you lie on the device and flap your wings like a bird. You turn the sim by turning your hands like a bird manipulates its wingtips. There is a fan attached to the front to simulate speed as you fly through the air.

“When you’re inside that environment, you actually feel like you're flying,” Isaacs said.  “You feel like you’re a bird.”
