Evergreen Aviation Museum Plans Big Expansion

Centerpiece Of $6.9 Million Effort Will Be New IMAX Theater

These are the halcyon days at Evergreen Aviation Museum. With attendance booming in the wake of Martin Scorsese's "The Aviator," the museum has just announced plans for a $6.9 million expansion that will be centered on a huge-screen IMAX theater.

The museum's gift shop is a major focus of the renovation -- expanding from 2,200 square feet to some 4,500 square feet. The original gift shop has already been torn down in preparation for construction of the new two-story structure.

The new gift shop will have a 15-foot high balcony overlooking the museum floor, according to Vice President Gary Arnold -- perfect, he said, for taking pictures.

"I think we're going to have a very dynamic addition to the museum," Arnold told the McMinnville, OR, News Register.

The IMAX theater will become the third-largest building in McMinnville history, according to museum construction executives. The town's two bigger buildings are also on the Evergreen campus.
