Jamail Larkins Inspires School Students And Faculty

FAA Spokesman Discusses Aviation Career Opportunities

Jamail Larkins, America’s youngest African American air show pilot at 22-years old, recently spoke to hundreds of students, counselors and guests from area high schools and colleges during the Frederick Aviation Education Expo in Frederick, Maryland. He shared with them career opportunities available in the aerospace industry.

"There are so many opportunities in the field, from marketing to design and construction to air traffic control," explained Larkins. "If I can inspire at least one student in every audience to consider a career in aviation, I’m happy."

The expo was co-sponsored by Avemco Insurance Company and Frederick Aviation.  Avemco also sponsors Larkins’ DreamLaunch tour, and works with him helping improve pilots' cockpit decision making through safety seminars.

The FAA recently joined forces with Larkins naming him its first official Ambassador for Aviation and Aerospace Education. For the past three years, Larkins has traveled the country encouraging children to stay in school, pursue their chosen careers and achieve their dreams.

Larkins’ love for aviation began at age 12 when he took his first flight with the Young Eagles program. At age 14, before most teenagers can even drive a car, Larkins traveled to Canada to become one of the youngest pilots to ever solo a plane. At age 15, he established Larkins Enterprises, Inc., of which he is President and Chief Operating Officer.

Larkins performed in his first airshow in 2002 at the tender age of 18. He is the national spokesman for the EAA's Vision of Eagles youth aviation education program.

He has already amassed over 700 flight hours in 36 different types of aircraft.

Larkins has been featured at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum and is part of a permanent aviation exhibit at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia alongside famous fliers like Chuck Yeager, Amelia Earhart and the Wright Brothers.
