Russia Begins Mars Mission Mock-Up

Goal: Simulate 500-Day Mission To Red Planet

Russia is preparing to put as many as six men -- perhaps an international team -- in a simulated space vehicle which will remain on Earth for 500 days to test technology in a simulation of a mission to Mars.

Russia's federal space agency, Roskosmos, issued a statement over the weekend saying, "The volunteers will enter a special module next year and will remain there for 500 days, going through all hardships of a long flight to the Red Planet.

"Many researchers argue that a long stay in outer space may negatively affect humans," the statement continued, "causing muscle, bone, immunity and psychological disorders. The experiment will help find answers to all of these questioned."

There's no immediate word what, if any, role the US will play in the experiment. Nor is Russia saying whether the European Space Agency will be involved.
