Russia Suspends MiG-29 Ops After Siberian Fatal

Type Entered Service In 1983

The pilot of a Russian fighter jet was killed Friday when his MiG-29 Fulcrum crashed in Siberia... prompting government officials to temporarily suspend operations with the aircraft.

Russia's Interfax and RIA Novosti news agencies quoted the country's Emergency Situations Ministry, stating the fighter jet impacted in the Chita district of Zabaykalsky, about 2,900 miles east of Moscow.

"There are no victims and is no destruction on the ground. A commission of defense ministry and air force officials has flown to the scene," read an air force statement, reported by RIA Novosti.

Roughly comparable to the American F-15 Eagle, the first twin-tailed MiG-29s entered service in 1983. In addition to the Russian air force, the type has also seen service in India and Cuba, and was operated by Iraqi pilots during the 1991 Gulf War.
