Iraq Begins Training Air Force

Pilots Will Fly American-Made Helos By End Of Year

Like a Phoenix from the ashes of ruins, the new Iraqi Air Force is starting to reach for the sky.

Over the weekend Middle East News Line reports 19 Iraqi flight officers got their rotor wings. They'll fly American-made helicopters beginning at the end of this year. They're currently undergoing training in Jordan.

But learning to fly US helicopters isn't their only training. Maj. Gen. Mark Kimmitt, deputy director of coalition operations in Iraq, says they're also getting lessons in democratic leadership. He hopes these 19 officers will form the core of a new Iraqi Air Force built on traditions and beliefs much different than those who flew for Saddam Hussein.
