Red China: Ready to Put Man in Space

Next Launch is For Real; 'High Ground' at Stake

Last week's unmanned Shenzhou 4 space mission was Red China's last such blast into space. The next one will be "for real," with an astronaut, er, "taikonaut," aboard. His name, sources say, is Chen Long, and he will be the first Chinese to go into space, in that country's long, military-led quest to build a permanent, hard-core communist presence in the heavens. Long is a 1000+ hour fighter pilot, though not much more is yet known about who he is.

The Shenzhou 4 capsule, identical to the one Chen Long will use, landed, as scheduled and on target, on the inner Mongolian plain, just after dark Sunday.

When the capsule was launched last Monday, the communist leader of China, Jiang Zemin, called the accomplishment a "great victory."
