New Mexico Attorney General Threatens To Sue Governor Over New Plane

(Cue schmaltzy soap opera music)

And now the latest in our continuing stooooory about the governor of New Mexico and his attempts to purchase a $4 million aircraft.

When last we left the painted desert, Governor Bill Richardson, a Democrat, was being hounded by Republicans over plans to replace the state's aging Aero-Commander with a more modern aircraft -- a turboprop, perhaps. But because the governor's staff plans to buy the aircraft with money from the road fund, Republicans -- and now Democratic Attorney General Patricia Madrid -- want the purchase stopped dead in its tracks.

Now, Madrid has sent letters to Richardson's office, two aircraft manufacturers and a bank repeating her assertion that the purchase is illegal and threatening to sue any or all of the recipients if they make a move toward finalizing a deal.

Stay tuned.
