GAMA Lauds FAA’s Issuance of GAMI Avgas STCs

100LL Alternative Approved

The General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA), by its own volition and pronouncement, exists to foster and advance the general welfare, safety, interests, and activities of the global business and general aviation industry.

To that end, GAMA president and CEO Pete Bunce has issued the following statement regarding the FAA’s approval of Supplemental Type Certificates (STC) to allow General Aviation Modifications Inc.’s (GAMI) 100-octane unleaded fuel (G100UL) to be used in every general spark-ignition engine and every airframe powered by such engines.

To wit:

“As we continue to work towards a safe and reliable transition to an unleaded future state for piston-engine aircraft, FAA issuance of a broader STC for GAMI’s G100UL is a significant milestone. Manufacturers look forward to having an opportunity to understand the composition and performance of this new fuel to support commercialization and use as a viable replacement for 100LL.”

The type certification process and issuance of the STCs denotes the FAA’s determination that engines and aircraft operating on the new G100UL fuel remain compliant with airworthiness safety standard requirements such as Part 33 and Part 23 for engines and airplanes respectively. Manufacturers’ understanding of a new fuel is essential to continued operational safety, regulatory compliance, and business activities such as customer technical support and warranty services. What’s more, the production of new engines and the issuance of relevant OEM service documents presupposes comprehension of a new fuel’s composition, performance, and long-term stability.

As a stakeholder in the trendy Eliminate Aviation Gasoline Lead Emissions (EAGLE) initiative, GAMA supports the general aviation industry’s ultimate goal of replacing 100LL aviation fuel with an environmentally-friendly alternative. To that end, GAMA recognizes Afton/Phillips66 and Lyondell/VP-Racing, Swift Fuels, and GAMI—the collective participation of which was essential to the FAA STC certification process.
