Southwest Uses ForeFlight Taxi Data Recorder For Own-Ship Authorization

Feature Provides Advanced Situational Awareness On The Ground

ForeFlight Mobile's Taxi Data Recorder was recently and successfully used by Southwest Airlines to collect GPS data and to perform a system accuracy assessment in pursuit of own-ship authorization under FAA AC 120-76C guidance.

Southwest pilots captured the requisite taxi data using ForeFlight’s GPS logging capability and then transferred the collected logs to EFB program administrators via ForeFlight's built-in cloud storage system. The ForeFlight Taxi Data Recorder toolkit also includes reporting features that present GPS accuracy information and export capabilities for reviewing GPS logs in GIS software such as Google Earth.

Corporate flight departments, fractional operators, and commercial operators alike understand how the display of ownship enhances the safety of operations by providing the pilot enhanced situational awareness on the ground. Operators seeking own-ship approvals using ForeFlight can download information at the link below to get started.

The company also now provides a database accuracy and system quality statement to customers seeking approval under FAA AC 120-76C guidance for the depiction of own-ship symbols on airport maps displayed via ForeFlight Mobile during airport surface operations. The letter includes a statement regarding airport map database accuracy and quality, as well as information about features in ForeFlight Mobile useful for collecting GPS information to support a system accuracy assessment.
