ForeFlight Announces Version 5, Terrain Awareness, Traffic, Stratus 2 Support

New Version Improves Situational Awareness, Expands iPad Capabilities

ForeFlight has released the latest version of its popular flight planning and cockpit app for pilots; ForeFlight Mobile 5. The new version, available for download from App Store, delivers a wide range of new features, including a new high performance mapping system, high resolution terrain, track-up and north-up maps, terrain and obstacle awareness, extended runway centerline display, recommended runway and pattern entry advisors, and automatic display of taxi diagrams.

ForeFlight also announced its forthcoming support for ADS-B traffic display as well as support for the second generation Stratus portable receiver. ForeFlight Mobile 5.1 ... available in late April ... will unlock ADS-R and TIS-B traffic display on the first generation Stratus. When connected to the all-new Stratus 2 dual-band ADS-B AHRS receiver, ForeFlight Mobile 5.1 will display air-to-air, ADS-R, and TIS-B traffic.

ForeFlight’s traffic system supports mixed-mode traffic display of both directional and non-directional targets. TrafficTrend technology shows the predicted path of traffic and trend information is dynamically modified as updated target information is received. “ForeFlight Mobile is rapidly evolving this year and we have added capabilities that make flying with the iPad a fantastic, continuously improving experience that brings enhanced situational awareness capabilities, improved in-flight productivity and intelligence, and features that improve decision making and safety”, said Tyson Weihs, co-founder and CEO of ForeFlight.

The highlights of ForeFlight Mobile 5 include:

  • A terrain and obstacle awareness system called Hazard Advisor that highlights hazards within 1,000’ of the aircraft’s GPS altitude. Terrain colors change smoothly and look stunning.
  • A high quality, void-filled terrain database that adds terrain data for gaps often missing from freely available terrain databases, improving the accuracy of the terrain awareness display.
  • Enhancements to ForeFlight Mobile’s Runway Advisor system that includes graphical display of extended runway centerlines and favored traffic pattern entries.
  • Runway winds support that shows the combined wind effects, headwind component, and crosswind component, and additionally helps pilots select the most favorable runway. ForeFlight Intelligent Apps for PilotsSupport for north up, track-up centered, and track-up forward displays giving pilots three options for changing map orientation.
  • An auto-taxi feature that automatically displays airport taxi diagrams after the aircraft enters the terminal area and ground speed drops below 40 kts.
  • World-wide touch planning support that allows complex flight plan creation to and from any point on the planet.

“With ForeFlight Mobile 5 and the release of the second generation Stratus 2, pilots have a robust, affordable, and high-performance electronic flight bag solution that delivers terrain awareness, enhanced runway selection and pattern entry intelligence, traffic awareness, TFR avoidance, in-flight weather display, and much more. With so much innovation happening, we are in an exciting time for portable flight planning and navigation apps.”
