Sonex Marks 10-Year Anniversary

Over 200 Completed Aircraft Since 1998

2008 is a special year for Sonex Aircraft staff, owners, builders, pilots and enthusiasts... as it marks the 10th anniversary of the Sonex design and Sonex Aircraft, LLC.

The company tells ANN February 28 was the official start of the anniversary celebration, being the 10th anniversary of the first flight of the Sonex prototype in 1998. Sonex Aircraft, LLC (originally established as Sonex-Ltd.) was established soon after, and sale of the first set of Sonex plans followed in August 1998.

The rest, as they say, is history. Since that first set of plans, Sonex has expanded to production of Sonex Aircraft Complete Airframe Kits, kit upgrades and options. The company also established the AeroConversions product line in 2001 with AeroCarb and AeroVee engine flagship products, and the introduction of many more AeroConversions products and accessories in the years since.

In 2003, Sonex introduced two new designs -- the Waiex sport plane (shown below) and Xenos motorglider. The company says over 200 Sonex Aircraft have been completed and flown in the worldwide fleet thus far, and notes sale of over 1,300 Sonex Aircraft plans and kits since 1998.

Sonex Aircraft, LLC Founder, President and designer John Monnett first entered the homebuilding marketplace with the Sonerai in 1971.

Since the establishment of Sonex, Monnett has enjoyed several honors, including induction into the EAA Homebuilder's Hall of Fame, receipt of the Oshkosh, WI Key to the City award (typically reserved for legends in aviation such as Paul Poberezny and Chuck Yeager), and the release of his biography, "John Monnett: from Sonerai to Sonex" written by Sonex builder Jim Cunningham.
