Big Job Ahead
Miami-Dade County
Manager George Burgess hired Florida Secretary of Transportation
Jose Abreu as the new Aviation Director for the county. The Friday
announcement means that Abreu, 51, takes charge of all of the
county airports including Miami International Airport starting July
11th.
"I don't underestimate the challenge at all," said Abreu to the
Sun-Sentinel. "Miami International Airport is a jewel. It's a
cornerstone for the hemisphere for tourism and for the economy, for
that matter. Obviously, it has to work. We have no choice on that
and we're going to move forward and do it correctly."
Miami International Airport generates more than $18 billion in
annual business activity and contributes to 234,000 area jobs
according to economic impact studies. A big problem to start with
is how to handle the construction of a new north terminal at the
airport. The project has had many delays and is almost $1 billion
over budget according to the Sun-Sentinel.
Abreu said the aviation job gives him the opportunity to return
to his family. "My wife's here in Miami and I'm up there in
Tallahassee," Abreu said. "I thought it was a great opportunity to
remain in transportation and continue to be in public office, not
to mention the challenge and the great job it is for my
career."
Burgess said Abreu was endorsed by the seven-member screening
committee and was chosen because he is a "unique fit" for the
aviation department.
"Our system of airports needs the type of strong, experienced
management that Jose brings to this position," said Burgess. "With
his experience of overseeing complex transportation-related issues
and large scale construction projects, I'm confident he will
provide the strong leadership necessary to maintain our airport's
role in supporting our regional economy and follow through
successfully with our ongoing capital improvement projects."
