AeroSports Update: Anniversaries To Be Celebrated At AirVenture 2016

Multiple Aircraft Groups At EAA AirVenture 2016 Celebrating Aircraft Anniversaries Ranging From 30 To 75 Years

EAA tells us that more than a half-dozen types of airplanes will be celebrating special anniversaries in 2016, and owners of those aircraft are commemorating the occasion at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh this year. The aircraft types celebrating anniversaries at Oshkosh are from across the spectrum including homebuilts, vintage aircraft, warbirds, aerobatic aircraft, and ultralights.

Among the aircraft types celebrating anniversaries at Oshkosh are:

Van’s RV-6 – 30 years
Vans will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of Van's Aircraft RV-6 design, which was the most successful kit design ever. This event will be led by 4,000-hour RV-6A pilot Paul Rosales.

Ultralights at Oshkosh – 40 years
EAA will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of John Moody's 1976 flight during that year's convention. Through this flight, John opened eyes to the fun flying of the low and slow, simple ultralight flight. Since then, the Ultralights have been an important part of EAA's convention.

Cessna C120/C140 – 70 years
The Vintage Aircraft Association is celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Cessna C120/C140. These airplanes became the iconic image of recreational flying through Frank Kingston Smith’s book, Week-end Pilot.

Navion – 70 years
The Vintage Aircraft Association is celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Navion. The Navion on was created for the post-World War II pilots who wanted a modern airplane.

De Havilland Chipmunk – 70 years
EAA Warbirds of America is celebrating the 70th anniversary of the De Havilland Chipmunk. The Chipmunk was a primary trainer for thousands of military pilots.

Interstate Cadet – 75 years
The Vintage Aircraft Association is celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Interstate Cadet. The interstate Cadet was one of a genre of airplanes built after World War II to meet the expected demand of post war pilots.

Grasshopper (L-Bird) – 75 years
EAA Warbirds of America is celebrating the 75th anniversary of the U.S. Army's 1941 Louisiana Maneuvers, which is regarded as the birth of the Grasshopper, or L-Bird. They’re inviting all owners of World War II era Grasshoppers to participate by bringing their military marked Aeronca, Interstate, Piper, Stinson, and Taylorcraft aircraft to AirVenture.

Stearman Aircraft (Warbirds and Vintage), commemorating Boeing’s 100th anniversary
EAA Warbirds of America is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Boeing Aircraft Company. They’re inviting all owners of military marked Boeing Stearman aircraft to participate by bringing their aircraft to AirVenture.

“Along with these milestone anniversaries, there are dozens of other aircraft groups and type clubs that make EAA AirVenture their annual reunion place,” said Rick Larsen, EAA’s vice present of communities and member programs, who coordinates AirVenture features and attractions. “Oshkosh really is the site of aviation’s family reunion. Whatever you fly or enjoy see flying, you’ll find kindred spirits on our flightline.”
