Sensis ASDE-X Now Operational At Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport

14th Airport To Receive Runway Safety Equipment

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is now the 14th airport operational with Sensis Airport Surface Detection Equipment, Model X (ASDE-X), a runway incursion detection and alerting system. In addition to increasing safety, the FAA has identified ASDE-X as saving time, money and fuel. The FAA's ASDE-X program will deploy the technology to a total of 35 of the nation's airports.

ASDE-X combines ground surveillance data from a number of sources to provide air traffic controllers with real-time, highly accurate position and location information of all aircraft and vehicles on the airport surface. By integrating surface movement radar, transponder multilateration and Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast (ADS-B) surveillance data, ASDE-X provides seamless, redundant coverage in all weather conditions. The system also features advanced runway conflict detection and alerting technology, called Safety Logic, which uses complex algorithms to discern and alert controllers of potential aircraft or vehicle incursions on the runway.

"The FAA's ASDE-X program provides airports like Phoenix Sky Harbor with a very powerful safety and efficiency tool," said Tony Lo Brutto, Vice President and General Manager of Sensis Air Traffic Systems. "ASDE-X is not only the most advanced surface surveillance technology for the prevention of runway incursions, it is also a flexible platform that enables sophisticated solutions such as precision runway monitoring, airport management tools and runway status lights."

ASDE-X is operational at the following 14 airports: General Mitchell International Airport (Milwaukee, WI); Theodore Francis Green Airport (Providence, RI); Orlando International Airport (Orlando, FL); William P. Hobby Airport (Houston, TX); Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (Atlanta, GA); Lambert - St. Louis International Airport (St. Louis, MO); Bradley International Airport (Windsor Locks, CT); Seattle Tacoma International Airport (Seattle, WA); Louisville International Airport (Louisville, KY); Charlotte Douglas International Airport (Charlotte, NC); Chicago O'Hare International Airport (Chicago, IL); Washington Dulles International Airport (Washington, DC); Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (Detroit, MI) and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (Phoenix, AZ).

In addition to ASDE-X, Sensis offers Advanced - Surface Movement Guidance and Control System (A-SMGCS) which features Sensis' Multistatic Dependent Surveillance (MDS) multilateration, SMRi solid-state X-band radar and Multi-Sensor Data Processor (MSDP) for a proven, flexible surveillance solution that delivers significant safety, capacity and cost savings benefits. Sensis A-SMGCS is operational at Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi, India and is being deployed at Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney Airports, Australia and at Hong Kong International Airport, China.
